Nine Leaves 2018 7 Y.O. Ex-Spanish Oak Single Cask #51 59°
This Nine Leaves is part of an exceptional series from the distillery founded in 2013 by Yoshiharu Takeuchi in the Japanese city of Otsu.
At Nine Leaves, Yoshiharu did everything himself, from moving barrels to bottling; then, at the end of 2023, he decided to close the distillery. A few months later, the entire stock of aging rums and the last batch of white rums were purchased by La Maison & Velier, continuing an extraordinary and evolving legacy.
The raw materials that make Nine Leaves rums are also exceptional: pure water from an underground spring and Kokuto sugar from the Okinawa archipelago. Fermentation lasts approximately four days, while distillation takes place in two Forsyth's Scottish pot stills: the first inspired by Chichibu and the second in the Glenmorangie style, with a great balance that enhances the aromatic complexity. Once distilled, the rums are aged in different types of casks, in two different locations: a warehouse subject to significant temperature fluctuations and an abandoned mine, with high humidity and very low temperatures.
Aged for seven years in a Spanish oak single cask, this rum has an original and vibrant aromatic profile.
On the nose, it is deep and surprising, with medicinal notes of cardamom, saffron, blood orange, mango, lava, walnuts, and chestnuts, which evolve over time towards nuances of fig, incense, cocoa powder, and Havana cigar. The palate is rich with initial notes of pine resin, burnt brown sugar, camphor, and asphalt, which gradually become saline and mineral, with hints of licorice, earth, and curry. The finish is dense and full-bodied, scented with licorice, sandalwood, and incense, with a cardamom tea aftertaste.
