Winemaker's notes
Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia 2022 sports a straw yellow color of beautiful intensity. The early harvest date has allowed us to produce a wine that highlights aromas of citrus and exotic fruits, followed by some notes of mint.
The aromatic freshness is confirmed in the mouth with an exceptional balance between amplitude and acidity.

TASTING NOTES 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 6% Viognier, 2% Verdicchio, 2% Semillon

THE CLIMATE OF 2022 The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by a rather classic winter with temperatures close to seasonal averages, followed by a rather cool and dry start to spring.

These climatological conditions induced budding of the vines later than the dates usually recorded. Subsequently, from May onwards, a long period of heat and drought, lasting around 75 days, remained in our region, putting the development cycle of the vineyard to the test.

The plants suffered significant water stress during the growth, flowering and veraison phases, generating a year with low production loads.

Fortunately, following these complications, the rainfall due to the characteristic summer storms unblocked the situation, reactivating the physiology of the vineyards which were able to resume the ripening process of the grapes. The latter unfolded during an ideal month of September for the accumulation of sugars, aromas and tannins, thanks above all to the freshness of the night temperatures. The harvest therefore took place in very good conditions, allowing us to choose the ideal harvest date for each vineyard and vine.

The white harvest began on August 9th with the Sauvignon Blanc.

VINIFICATION AND AGING

The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg boxes in the early hours of the morning and immediately cooled upon arrival in the cellar to keep all their aromatic potential intact.

After a careful selection, the whole bunches were subjected to slow and soft pressing with maximum attention to protection against oxidation.

After a static decantation of approximately 12 hours, the musts were placed in 25% new barriques, 25% used, and in steel and concrete tanks (50%).

The alcoholic fermentation took place at temperatures not exceeding 22°C. Malolactic fermentation was not carried out. Maturation continued for 6 months on the lees with bâtonnage lasting for the entire period.

Before bottling, the various batches were blended and a light clarification was carried out. The wine was then subjected to a further refinement in the bottle for 12 months before being introduced onto the market.
