The Royal Navy designated Gin that passed this empirical test as "Navy strength": if the gunpowder remained flammable even after being immersed in Gin, then the spirit could be transported safely aboard Royal Navy warships.

Navy measurement continued until the 1890s and even today indicates a spirit with an alcohol content greater than 57%.
