The wine
Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione is produced exclusively from the selection of the best Sangiovese grapes coming from the estate of the same name located in the heart of Chianti Classico. The area has been renowned for its wine production since the year one thousand. The vineyards extend over soil rich in limestone rock with an average amount of clay at a height of approximately 300 meters above sea level. The refinement takes place in the historic cellars of the 10th century Badia di Passignano.

Climate

2020 in Chianti Classico began with a mild and dry winter and, only in the final part of March, was it characterized by a short cold period; these climatic conditions favored an earlier budding of the vine. The moderately rainy and rather cool spring preceded a hot summer, free of thermal excesses, and characterized by some rain which allowed the bunches to grow and start ripening optimally. The month of September, during which the harvesting operations began, was characterized especially in its final part by light rainfall which favored the completion of the phenolic maturation of the grapes. The harvest began in the last ten days of September and ended in the first days of October.

Vinification and refinement

After destemming, the grapes were carefully selected and then softly pressed. The alcoholic fermentation took place in approximately 10 days, following which the must remained in maceration with its skins for a further 10-12 days. After racking, and once the malolactic fermentation was finished, the wine began its period of aging in Hungarian and partly French oak for a few months. During this phase it was constantly tasted in order to maximize the evolution in wood. Badia a Passignano was bottled in estate and subsequently rested in the bottle before its release on the market

Tasting Notes
Badia a Passignano 2018 has a ruby red color. On the nose it is striking for its complexity: the intense notes of ripe red fruit, in particular sour cherry and black cherry, alternate with sweet hints of blueberry and apricot; the bouquet is completed by pleasant balsamic sensations of aromatic herbs and toasted aromas of chocolate, coffee, liquorice and vanilla. On the palate it is rich, enveloping, juicy and tasty, but well supported by an extraordinary freshness and minerality, characteristics which, together with the sweet aftertaste, give the wine length and gustatory persistence. Excellent refinement potential.
