A lesser-known Barolo appellation, "Comunale" can be produced by combining multiple parcels within the same municipality. Thus, with its 11 villages, the Barolo area can produce 11 Barolo Comunales. Poderi Gianni Gagliardo has been producing two: the Barolo del Comune di La Morra since the 2016 vintage and the Barolo del Comune di Monforte since the 2020 vintage.
Our Barolo La Morra is produced from a specific area within the municipality. This is the area surrounding the winery, characterized by a lower altitude than the town average and very open hills. It is a place historically recognized by local winemakers for the mellow aromas of its wines, which can express themselves even at a young age.
The two parcels used for the Barolo del Comune di La Morra are close to each other, on the same hill. However, they express very different characteristics. The first parcel is a plateau that slopes westward, very open and exposed, almost humpbacked. This allows for a significant energy buildup in the grapes and, therefore, in the wines. The second parcel features a south-facing amphitheater and a hill. This gives the blend its elegant character.
