The company's origins lie in the Colla family, who have been cultivating vineyards in Piedmont since the mid-19th century. Their home territory is Santo Stefano Belbo, a land of great Moscato wines, the Langhe bordering Monferrato, which later became the Pavesian region. Generation after generation, the family moved to the Alba area, specifically to Diano d'Alba, a hill renowned for Dolcetto, where Paolo Colla was born in 1913.

In 1972, Marivanna Colla, Paolo's only daughter, married a young man from Roero: Gianni Gagliardo. Gianni was a very ambitious young man, and it was Paolo, with paternal affection, who instilled in him a passion for wine.
