Climate

The 2016 vintage was characterized by a basically rainy winter and a mild spring. These climatic conditions favored a slight advance of budding and flowering, recovered starting from the setting, which took place regularly. The summer, which tended to be cooler than the 2015 vintage, was characterized by temperatures above the seasonal average, especially during July and August. The light rainfall during the month of September and the consequent lowering of temperatures allowed the grapes to complete their ripening in an optimal way, enhancing the freshness of the Sangiovese and giving the wine soft and balanced tannins. The harvest for the Vignaferrovia took place between the end of September and the beginning of October.

Vinification and ageing

The careful and accurate selection of the bunches and a generally favorable climatic trend have guaranteed the arrival in the cellar of perfectly intact and ripe grapes. After destemming and soft pressing, the grapes were transferred to stainless steel tanks where the alcoholic fermentation took place. The wine remained in contact with its skins for a period of about three weeks, subsequently abandoning the steel to allow itself to be aged in wood. The slow and balanced evolution, which began in small 5 Hl barrels up to 30 Hl, took place over more than two years. Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia was then subsequently bottled, thus beginning its long process of aging in the bottle.

Historical data

Tenuta Pian delle Vigne, located 6 km. southwest of Montalcino, it takes its name from the homonymous locality where there is a characteristic 19th century railway station. The company is made up of 184 hectares, of which 70 are vineyards exposed mainly to the south-west at an altitude of about 130 meters above sea level. Pian delle Vigne has always pursued a philosophy oriented towards large casks, capable of preserving the extraordinary integrity of the Sangiovese fruit and giving Brunello its characteristic vibrant elegance. The company has been owned by the Antinori family since 1995, the year of the first harvest of Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Vignaferrovia is produced only in the best years from a small vineyard of about 4 and a half hectares, adjacent to the ancient station of Pian delle Vigne, resting on a clayey and calcareous soil, rich in small skeleton. It was not produced in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014.

Tasting notes
Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia 2016 has a ruby red color with slight garnet reflections. The nose is complex and intense, notes of ripe plum and marasca cherry combine with hints of dried lavender flowers, sandalwood and Mediterranean scrub herbs; the bouquet is completed by pleasant sensations of cocoa powder, sweet spicy aromas of cinnamon and clove and a vibrant haematic note, typical of Sangiovese. On the palate the wine is rich and compact on entry and develops in the sign of the softness and silkiness of the tannins which, together with the freshness, make it intense, fine and persistent. Notes of leather, tobacco, and rather fresh, almost mentholated balsamic sensations make up the finish together with aromas of ripe morello cherry and bitter cocoa.
