Climate Trend
This vintage's climate was characterized - at the end of May - by a rather early flowering in the vineyards
: temperatures typical of the summer months were recorded during this period. It is no coincidence that the summer of
2022 will be remembered as one of the longest in recent years. In the first part of the summer, the plants
saw an acceleration in the growth of the shoots and the setting of the inflorescences, thus providing excellent
homogeneity in the vineyards. In July, however, the vines adapted to the external environment, slowing their initial growth to
protect themselves from the summer heat. The providential rain of the Assumption in mid-August finally allowed us to obtain
clear musts with a fragrant appearance and flavor.
Vinification and Aging
The harvest was done by hand in 15kg crates during the coolest hours of the day. Once they arrived at the cellar,
the grapes underwent a slow and delicate pressing, which allowed the must to be extracted from the heart of the berry.
Then a 12-hour cold clarification was carried out, which allowed for clarification, a crucial operation in
creating the great qualitative harmony, typical of Leonia. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a
constant and controlled temperature; a portion was fermented in wood. Next, the
different Chardonnay and Pinot Noir cuvées were assembled, followed by tirage (the addition of the tirage liqueur) and secondary fermentation in the
bottle, with a long aging on the lees. At the end of the aging on the lees, the riddling takes place, the purpose of which is to
collect the deposit of noble lees in the neck of the bottle. All that remains is the final operation, dégorgement, to
clarify Leonia. The finishing touches consist of further bottle aging.
Tasting Notes
Leonia Brut 2022 has an intense straw yellow color. The perlage is extremely fine and persistent, contributing to the
overall elegance of the wine. The bouquet is complex and varied; the initial aroma is extremely fresh and evokes
citrus and white floral notes. This is followed by tertiary notes due to the partial fermentation in wood and
typical notes of pastry and bread crust, resulting from the extended aging on the lees. On the palate, it is fresh and savory,
characterized by a splendid correspondence between taste and aroma. It has a long finish.
