Best Liquor in the World 2021
The satisfaction is almost incredulity in Roccella Jonica (RC), when we learn that for the second time the WORLD LIQUEUR AWARDS rewards Casa Rupes. The international jury of the coveted prize last year recognized the "Gold" of the World Liqueur Awards for Amaro Rupes and two awards for 2021: the World's Best Herbal and the Best Italian Herbal with the following tasting note: "Orange predominant in the aroma, the integration between sweet and bitter is very well expressed. A simple but very well executed profile "; therefore the highest step of the podium in the world.

The jury, which for this edition had to work hard due to the size and importance of the participants at an international level, re-awarded the classic and "well-executed" soul of the Calabrian Amaro which has its roots in centuries of Calabrian "witty" tradition .

Rupes Gold, thanks to its decisive and refined taste, with an unmistakably Calabrian character, recovers this story, which tells a territory and its excellences starting from the products of nature that are born naturally and grow genuinely. Thirty officinal and aromatic herbs, coming from Locride, create this singular and pleasant alchemy between bitter, spicy and sweet herbaceous notes. For the preparation of Rupes Gold the old artisan method of cold maceration of the ingredients is still used, among which wild fennel, Calabrian licorice roots and bay leaf and a citrus note of bitter orange from Calabria stand out and then left to refine in oak barriques.

Tasting it you can still relive the legend that tells of how the name was coined by patriotic intellectuals in the first half of the 19th century, precursors of the Carbonari movements that led to Unity, making it derive from the place where it was distilled: at the foot of the famous Rupe of Roccella, once Anphisia.

Many years passed and Vincenzo, master distiller, owner of the original recipe and founder of the Errigo family, before dying at the end of the 19th century, snatches a promise from his son: "Rupes' recipe must be handed down but the story of those meetings for the freedom must remain a secret for at least a century "; there was still the trepidation of the Kingdom of the Bourbons which was giving way to united Italy. So that recipe was handed down in silence, from father to son, for four generations. Rupes therefore finds its roots from the encounter between a simple merchant with some young people with high ideals. And thanks to Vincenzo, who passed away in 2019, who bore the name of his great-great-grandfather, and to his two sons Francesco and Luca, he is back on the tables; and it is nice to think of a toast, now as then, for freedom and pleasure, in a historical moment in which the National Unity has returned to conscience as an added value in being Italian!

HISTORY

It all began around the first half of the 19th century, at the foot of the famous cliff of Roccella Ionica, formerly known as Anphisia.

In this isolated place, a young man named Vincenzo, progenitor of the Errigo family, distils the medicinal herbs that he collects at the foot of the rock face at night and secretly sells the infusions to his most trusted friends.

The ingredients used and the way he makes his liqueur are contained in a secret recipe, handed down to him by his dear mother.

One night, while he is intent on distilling, he meets Pietro, a young local lawyer, who, a few steps from his abusive distillery, meets with other friends to discuss in the darkness of the night. They are a group of patriotic intellectuals, precursors of the Carbonari uprisings. Vincenzo, who at first is suspicious, agrees to let young people try his infusion, never asking what they talk about during those meetings. Sometimes, in the distance, he hears Peter calling the liqueur "Rupes", while together with his friends he raises the glass exclaiming "Long live the freedom", "Long live the Fatherland".

Shortly thereafter, Pietro and his friends are publicly executed, but Vincenzo cannot explain those deaths. He jealously guards the secret of those nocturnal encounters and, out of fear, he stops producing the Rupes.

Time passes and, before dying, at the end of the 19th century, he snatches a promise from his son, after telling him about those young people and their dream of freedom. The amaro recipe will have to be handed down, but the story of those meetings will have to remain a secret for at least a century.

The promise is kept and the recipe is jealously guarded and handed down from father to son for four generations.

If this important entrepreneurial reality exists in Locride and if Rupes has won such a prestigious award, it is above all due to Vincenzo's intuition. But not only. It is also thanks to those who, for years, have successfully carried out this undertaking: his great-grandson Vincenzo, who passed away last year, and his two sons, Francesco and Luca.

The unique, unmistakable and balanced flavor and the intense aroma make Rupes a bitter that is also appreciated overseas. Made with thirty local officinal and aromatic herbs, it has a strong and refined taste. It is still obtained today with the old artisanal method of cold maceration of the ingredients, among which wild fennel, Calabrian licorice roots and bay leaf stand out, which give it freshness, persistence of taste, character and pleasantness on the palate. . The cold method involves the infusion of a hydroalcoholic solution, for at least twenty days, in large steel vats, with high quality medicinal herbs and the subsequent reduction of the alcohol content, by adding water and sugar.

Maceration allows you to fully extract the properties of the herbs, in addition to the bitter active ingredients that stimulate digestion and promote intestinal functions (as evidenced by several scientific studies). Amaro Rupes, with an amber brown color, should be enjoyed at room temperature or frozen.

Excellent after meals or as an aperitif, it is also pleasant as an elongated drink with seltzer and ice. The bottle, with its essential and elegant design, and its refined logo, identify the content from the noble past. A bitter symbol of the Calabrian tradition. A reason for pride for this beautiful and wild land, of which Rupes contains precious aromas and flavors.
