CLIMATE
The beginning of the vintage was characterized by a winter with slightly cooler temperatures. Higher than the seasonal average, and with little rainfall. Spring arrived with lower temperatures, resulting in a delay in bud break until the first week of April, a period still accompanied by scarce rainfall until
the end of May. Summer began with a rapid rise in temperatures, which, combined with the rains of late May, led to rapid growth of the foliage and a consequent thickening of the canopy.
The rains that arrived at the beginning of summer also contributed to a
prolongation of the flowering phase, delaying the arrival of fruit set by about 10-15 days. The summer continued with frequent rainfall between the second week of June and the second week of July, then suddenly changed to an increasingly warm and dry season, which led to a slightly faster veraison phase in
August. Unlike the previous vintage, the harvest began more in line with the area's typical timing, around the end of the third week of August with the Chardonnay grapes, and then continued five days later with the Sauvignon Blanc.
The red grape harvest began immediately thereafter, concluding in early October. However, it should be noted that the harvest of the Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties proved more challenging due to the particularly irregular summer that led to slight imbalances in the vines.
This made it difficult to determine the right harvest times, combining technological analysis parameters with the grape's flavor and health conditions. An important note regarding the 2023 vintage is the severe downy mildew infections that occurred between mid-June and late July, leading to a significant drop in production for the Chardonnay and Merlot varieties, and to a lesser extent for the Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
