Climate
The 2022 Chianti Classico vintage was characterized by
dry and generally warm weather until
mid-August, with June and July in particular
marked by temperatures above historically high levels for the
territory. Despite this, the vines managed to
self-regulate, ensuring uniform budbreak and flowering
and weathering the hottest months well, appearing
at veraison in an ideal vegetative and productive state. The rains and
the resulting drop in temperatures in mid-August favored
significant temperature variations between day and night,
allowing the ripening process to get off to a
perfect start. The excellent weather conditions in early autumn
guaranteed a high-quality harvest. The harvest
took place on September 23rd for the Cabernet Franc, continued on
the 26th and 27th for the Sangiovese, and concluded on October 5th
with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Total annual rainfall: 693.2 mm
Average temperature April 1 - October 5: 21°C Rainfall
April 1 - October 5: 373.9 mm
Vinification
Great care was taken both in the vineyard during the harvest and in the cellar, where the grapes were destemmed and the
berries, before being delicately pressed, carefully selected on the sorting table and then transferred
by gravity to the tanks. It is essential, in fact, that
only perfect grapes reach the 60-hectare, conical vinification tanks. During fermentation and maceration, utmost attention was paid to maintaining
the correct balance between fruit and tannin quality, giving the wine sweetness and fragrance as well as
identity and character. Immediately after racking, malolactic fermentation began, which, in barrique,
enhanced the wine's complexity and pleasantness. The aging process took place in new French oak barrels
for approximately 15 months. After an initial period of aging in separate lots, these were blended to
complete the evolution in wood.
Historical Data
Solaia is a vineyard of approximately 20 hectares with a southwest exposure, between 350 and 400 meters above sea level, on rocky calcareous soil
with alberese and galestro rock, located at Tenuta Tignanello. The Antinori family produced this wine for the
first time with the 1978 vintage; The initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was
repeated in 1979. In subsequent vintages, 20% Sangiovese was introduced and some adjustments were made
to the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, until reaching the current composition. Solaia
is produced only in exceptional years and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1992.
Tasting Notes
Solaia 2022 is an intense ruby red in color with bright purple highlights. The bouquet opens with
notes of dark fruit: blackcurrant, blueberry, plum, and fig intertwine with floral hints of violet. Sweet hints
of icing sugar and giandui alternate with spicy sensations of white pepper, cigar box, and cinchona. The creamy and rich entry is supported by extraordinary freshness and energy. The silky and enveloping tannins form a dense and refined texture that supports an intense and profound finish.
