1 BOTTLE X 75cl
WINE MAKING IN MASSETO IS BOTH AN ADVENTURE AND A CONTINUOUS DISCOVERY. A PLACE WHERE INTUITION PREVAILS, WHERE NO ONE COULD BE SURE OF THE SUCCESS OF THE FRAGILE MERLOT, EVEN IF THE PRESENCE OF THE BLUE CLAYS OF THE PLIOCENE SUGGESTED THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCCESS.
In homage to its vigor, its softness and the enormous debt to the soil from which it originates, Masseto owes its name to the hard blocks of blue clay, called ‘massi’, that form on the surface of the vineyard.
Masseto is anchored in the mists of geological time and bears witness to the centuries-old convulsions of the earth and the sea in the heart of the Mediterranean. Masseto belongs to that geography that is first and foremost geology. Rooted in the depths of its blue clays.
In the following years, seismic forces bent the layers of soil and so, one of these folds brought out the Pliocene clays, allowing them to see the light again, enjoy the sea breeze and feel the heat of the sun.
Nature is therefore the first creator of Masseto.
It took the genius, tenacity and intuition of some men from different backgrounds to look beyond local winemaking customs and traditions and reveal all the mystery and power of this land.
Climate and Vintage
The 2022 vintage was characterized by a fairly typical winter, with temperatures close to seasonal averages,
followed by a cool, dry spring. This context led to budbreak
slightly later than usual. However, from the end of May,
temperatures were already quite high, reaching peaks of 35°C, with a long period of heat and drought lasting about 75 days,
thus impacting the natural cycle of our vineyards. Fortunately, following these weather
conditions, rainfall from typical summer storms resolved the situation,
restoring the physiology of the plants as they prepared for the 2022 harvest. September was
ideal for the accumulation of sugars, aromas, and tannins, thanks above all to the cool nighttime
temperatures. The harvest took place in excellent conditions, allowing us to choose the ideal harvest date for
each individual parcel. The first Merlot grapes were harvested on September 6th, and the harvest concluded on October 9th with the Cabernet Franc harvest.
Vinification and Aging
The grapes were hand-picked into 15-kg crates. After destemming and light pressing, the berries were
gravity-fed into concrete vats. Each individual vineyard parcel was vinified separately.
Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at temperatures around 25-28°C, with two or three
pumpings over the cap per day and délestages where necessary. Maceration periods were extended from 21 to 28 days,
according to the aromatic and extraction profiles of each individual lot. Malolactic fermentation took place in
barriques, 100% new oak, keeping the parcels separate for the first 12 months of aging.
Subsequently, the wines were blended and returned to barriques for another year, reaching
a total of 24 months of aging in wood. After bottling, the 2022 Masseto was left to age
for another 12 months in the bottle before being released.
Tasting Notes
Founded in its unique soil, the 2022 Masseto reflects in its grapes the concentration of small red
fruits that are immediately recognizable on the nose. A bright, vivid red color typical of its
identity, it awaits release with a rich and enveloping palate. Naturally powerful, it awaits
to express itself, with the final months of aging in the bottle, thus finding the perfect combination of strength and elegance
as always in its style.
