Ornellaia 2015 “Il Carisma”

The South African artist William Kentridge has been chosen to interpret the character “Il Carisma” (Charisma) of the Ornellaia 2015 vintage. For the tenth edition of the project Vendemmia d’Artista he has created a work of art for the estate, customized a limited series of bottles in large format, and designed a label that, expressing the vintage character, will be inserted in each Ornellaia case containing 6 bottles of 750ml. In addition the same label will be replicated on all Magnums and on their wooden cases lids.

Artist William Kentridge

William Kentridge is a South African artist, internationally acclaimed for his drawings, films, sculptures, animations and performances, in which he transmutes sobering political events into powerful poetic allegories. Since the seventies, William Kentridge has developed and outstanding oeuvre that is rooted in avant-grade theatre and the politically engaged art forms of the early twentieth century, a trajectory of modernism that holds on to the figurative as a way to reflect the world. Growing up in Johannesburg during the apartheid regime and witnessing his collapse, Kentridge has been strongly informed by the political and social realities of South Africa. But beyond their specific context, his observations serve as allegories for the human condition and the world at large.

Ispiration

“The images on the Ornellaia labels are essentially about the work of making wine, and mainly of the vendemmia, the grape harvest” recalls the artist. “The secateurs come from a memory of the one occasion I took part in a Tuscan vendemmia, when with my family I had six months in San Casciano outside Florence. This made me understand the human labour involved in making the wine; though what I remember most strongly is the pleasure of the lunch prepared in the vineyards by the local farmer’s wife. A depth of flavour made by the combination of work and terroir. The aspects of wine-making that combine both manual craft and mechanical processes suggested the transformation of people into machines and machines into workers. This is part of an ongoing series of drawings and other work about human labour. The drawings are done on pages from various old Italian cash books found in flea markets and second-hand shops in the Tuscan area.”
