Climate

2017 was characterized by a mild and particularly dry winter which favored the early budding. The sudden drop in temperatures at the end of April which involved various areas of Tuscany did not cause any problems in Bolgheri, thanks to the proximity to the sea capable of mitigating temperatures by keeping them above zero. The period from May to August was characterized by a basically hot and dry climate, conditions which limited the vegetative development of the vine and reduced the size of the bunches. The rains at the end of August – September slightly lowered the temperatures, guaranteeing a balanced conclusion of ripening, especially in the later varieties and vineyards. Cabernet Franc, of all the cultivated varieties, is perhaps the one that reacted best to the oddities of this vintage, concentrating the extract and the aromatic notes but without losing its freshness and balance. The harvest took place on 13 September for the first parcel selected and on 20/21 of the month for the last two.

Harvest and vinification:

The grapes were harvested by hand and, after a careful selection grain by grain, a soft pressing and a cold pre-maceration were carried out, which was followed by the start of the alcoholic fermentation. The wine was then transferred to new French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured for 18 months. At the end of the refinement and after careful tastings, the best barriques were selected and combined to give life to Matarocchio. The wine then rested for over a year in the bottle before being released on the market.

Alcohol content 14.5% Vol.

Historical data:

Matarocchio is born exclusively from the best Cabernet Franc grapes from a small and precious vineyard of Tenuta Guado al Tasso. A wine capable of representing the maximum expression of the Bolgheri terroir through great finesse and personality, produced exclusively in excellent vintages.

Tasting notes:

Matarocchio 2017 is a rich wine with an intense color; The nose is striking for the hints that recall juniper, laurel, morello cherry and licorice. It is a wine which, despite the assumptions of the vintage, does not flaunt opulence: no overripe notes but, on the contrary, great elegance and integrity which make it almost austere at the moment. The tannins are remarkably smooth and silky. A vintage that will be able to express itself wonderfully in the years to come.
