TENUTA SAN GUIDO - SASSICAIA 2023
The newly released Sassicaia vintage has received two important awards:
Robert Parker - 100 POINTS
Decanter - 98 POINTS
Below are the tasting notes from the two guides.
Wine Advocate - Robert Parker:
Few Sassicaia vintages convey immediate joy, richness, and complexity like the 2023 vintage.
Tasted both before and after bottling in January 2026, this wine surprises with its openness and generosity even in its youth, a rare trait for Sassicaia, known for often being enigmatic at this stage.
The 2023 vintage was marked by a cold winter and above-average rainfall, followed by a severe bout of downy mildew that damaged the leaves, requiring extremely rigorous bunch selection and reducing yields by 20%. Only those wineries willing to make these sacrifices have achieved success, and the best wines rank among the most fascinating and challenging to interpret in recent years.
The blend comprises 13% to 14% Cabernet Franc along with Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Franc playing a decisive role at the phenolic level, enhancing elegance, linearity, and luminosity.
The nose initially reveals wild sage, rosemary, and dark fruits, then evolves into a minerality of crushed stone, rose petals, and a refined spicy bouquet of pink pepper, nutmeg, anise, cardamom, bergamot, and blood orange, accompanied by a delicate note of Roman pennyroyal, sweeter and gentler than traditional mint.
On the palate, the wine displays a splendid smoothness, framed by chalky tannins and a well-defined mineral tension. The acidity is bright, guaranteeing great aging potential.
In the glass, the wine remains fluid and supple, while different facets of the bouquet emerge.
Like the legendary 1985 vintage, 2023 was also a difficult and challenging year, marked by a harsh winter, but it proves that extraordinary wines are born under pressure.
DECANTER:
Sassicaia 2023 will divide enthusiasts.
The quality is beyond question, but it takes the concept of finesse and elegance to a whole new level. In reality, this is more a reflection of the vintage's conditions than a deliberate winemaking choice—but isn't that what all great wineries strive to convey in the glass?
For some, it will be too light, too floral, too distant from the "classic" Bolgheri. For others, especially those who have followed this estate for several years, it is a dream come true: a vivid and concrete model for the future of Italian reds. And me? I'm undecided. It almost pales in comparison to the depth of fruit and firm tannins of the 2022,
while the 2019, tasted alongside it, highlights its juiciness and silkiness.
Soft, light, and fragrant, the 2023 captivates with its pure, crisp berries, juicy and savory palate, and a lingering freshness that changes your mind... and for the better.
Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc.
